Odds of Finding Any Work Soon

Question

HI Expats,

I took off four years to care for my kids but want to return to work ASAP now that my youngest is in school. I have government experience, international affairs M.A., and speak Dutch but little French. I will start looking for positions teaching English or editing copy but am willing to do almost any kind of work. What are my odds of finding a job within 2-3 months? Do you have any tips for someone in my situation? TIA

J

You could find something in a few days, and it could take a year or 2. The important thing is to look & apply systematically for whatever comes up.

I'm assuming you don't have any work permit issues.

Your best bet should be building on existing experience and your existing CV. That's because it's what people expect. If you apply for a job you are under-qualified for, they will just see you as gap-filling and unlikely to stay, therefore pass you by.

Teaching and editing are likely to be freelance. That's not a choice to be taken lightly. Make sure it is a choice you want to take and will be happy and financially secure with BEFORE you consider a freelance position.

The important thing is to keep at it and work through each day's vacancies systematically, make notes, follow up with agencies, etc. You have to stay positive, cause positive people get the jobs.
