Courier Work

Question

As it seems with age, a job opportunity is several light years away, so I am now thinking of going into a courier Service starting with my own car and renting a van when necessary. I want to ask the good people on here if they can point me to where I can obtain the necessary information for loads, parcels etc.. and how much is charged per km.
I am a qualified electrical engineer by profession, so this is a completely new area I am looking at. Thanks for any responses.

The cheapest van hire is Europcar in my experience. For charges, I suggest you do a lot of work finding out who your competitors will be and how much they charge. Send something through their system as a test. There's a lot of subcontracting that goes on too..... Note the EU/ government stuff tends to go through their own network so that's a huge hole in your market. Along with restaurants, couriers have one of the highest "going bust" rates so the very best of luck. I looked into bike couriering as it is very popular in London/NY. There are three companies out there, but when ever I visit the centre, I never see any single speed machines! Explore that too. Finally the tax system is complex here so make sure you set up the right sort of company.
