Bank guarantee rental deposit

We originally had a rental guarantee deposit with the bank, 10 years ago. I believe they no longer guaranteed this after 9 years. We now need to leave the apartement. Does this mean we have no deposit locked anywhere ?! How does this work with hanging over keys end exit reports?
