Pay for boiler maintenance after moving out?

Question

After I moved out of my last apartment, my former landlord is now asking me to pay a part of the yearly boiler maintenance cost. Is that a legitimate request? I would think that when you have your boiler maintained (which I did every year while living there) you pay for its future safety, not past. But then, many things have already surprised me about the written and unwritten rules of living in Belgium so I figure it's better to ask.

Bottom line, fair or not(and often not) is what does your contract say?

Show him the last bill. If it's less than a year old, you've paid already.

As Mike says, your contract should make your obligation clear.
As to what is fair, if the annual service is due the week after you move out, perhaps the request is reasonable. However, what happened after you moved in? Did you pay for the first service in full or was part paid by the previous occupant?

The contract only says I am responsible for having maintenance carried out once a year. I was the first tenant of the apartment after the boiler was installed, and had I the first service done a few months after moving in, when the landlord said the certificate had expired. I forwarded the new service certificate to him each year so he knows the dates.
