Have you asked them what the procedure is?

the bank will not send you anything, however your property might still have an "hypoteque" on top of it whihc was assigned when you contracted the mortgage.. if you want to remove meaning that the bank will have no future claims you can contatc your Notaire and he can do the procedure for you (atba cost of course). Otherwise you can leave it the way it is, but if you will sell the property one day the cost will be deducted from the selling price

I never received anything either. The bank still appears to be claiming a minor sum for the life insurance policy each year, I've never got round to questioning it. But unlike in the UK, you already hold the deeds so I would not worry too much. I would be interested if R could elaborate some more on this "hypotheque" cost?

My bank explained to me that the cost for removing the mortgage inscription before it expired (30 years in Belgium) will cost about 1000 EUR. They said I should consider carefully if I would need another inscription because I would have to pay the same costs for another 30-year inscription. According to them, in Belgium people do not remove inscriptions unless they sell the property.
