Public transport heavily disrupted by today’s strike
Union strike actions have brought public transportation to a crawl today in Belgium, with very few trains, metros, trams and buses operating across the country. The socialist trade union for public sector workers, ACOD, called for the general strike as a form of protest against the austerity measures of the federal and regional governments.
National railway company SNCB warned for heavily disrupted train service starting from 22.00 on Tuesday. The international trains Thalys, Eurostar and TGV will not ride again until 22.00 on Wednesday.
Brussels public transport company STIB expects very few metros, trams and buses to operate today, while bus company De Lijn is most affected in Pajottenland, outside of Brussels.
The strike will affect almost all public services, including several schools and museums which have closed for the day.
