Insurance and Suicide

Question

To be clear- I am not considering suicide, this is not asking for a friend, etc....

Recently, a father in our community took his own life. The community is trying to assist and help this widowed mother and children. Some of us were wondering if most likely (if they had it) would his insurance pay off the home, pay the independent retirement fund, etc. Or does suicide make this null and void which means they really might be in financial straights soon. Do any of you know the general rule in Belgium? Also, curious if it is the same for assisted suicide?

Insurance policies typically have a restriction on paying out on suicide and it is commonly one or two years after the policy came into force. All you can do is check the individual policies and/or ask the insurers or the broker.
If they had a mortgage, it would be unusual if the lender did not insist on insurance protection and the lender will know the terms of the cover.
The widow is obviously in the best position to find out these details and, indeed, may be the only person to whom the various people will reveal details.
A good place to start is with her mutuelle who will have staff available to help in these situations.

The commune's CPAS should be able to help with advice and support too. The head of ours recently emphasised its role as the first port of call when a resident experiences difficulties of any kind, rather than just being a provider of financial assistance.
