Belgian Citizenship Language Test
A2 - and it has to be the language of the region in which you are currently registered as living (so if you are domiciled in Bruxelles/Brussel you have the choice of French or Dutch).
I don't know what it's like in the communes in Brussels, but in Flanders, it all depends on your municipality. I received nationality without having to have any proof of my language skills because I did an inburgering course (in English!). Though I spoke Dutch during the paperwork process, so I guess they didn't feel anything further was required.
Like lmbsie, I spoke Dutch in all my dealings with the commune when I applied for Belgian nationality and there was no further check - or even mention - of my abilities with the language.
Language competence only became one of the necessary qualifications for acquisition of Belgian nationality when the system changed a couple of years or so ago. Even now it doesn't apply to every category but it does to most.
I got my nationality this year, just fyi.
Hi LMBSIE,
How long did it take you to get nationality from application to receipt.
just wondering how long its taking nowadays in Flanders?
@Becasse You always give great and accurate advice.
Becasse is correct.
To add, Non-EU residents are required to do this, whereas, EU residents may choose to do this. That is probably the reason why some are stating they didn't have to meet this requirement.
@PeterA Where are you living at in Belgium?
Non-EU pathway to citizenship isn't the same as the EU pathway to citizenship.
If I pay taxes for 5 years then is my economic integration done?
