Refugee Crisis in Belgium - how can I help?

Question

Dear xpats,
the refugee crisis has clearly hit all Western Europe, and Belgium is clearly affected.

I am wondering if there are any ways to help in and around Brussels? I'm thinking volunteer work or the like. I speak several languages, have some past experience in the area, so I want to do my part to help with the situation.

Any suggestions/directions would be highly appreciated.

Thanks,
G.

Hi not quite what you asked but a friend just told me there is a Syrian refugee camp on Chausse d'Anvers 59, she said they dropped off some items. She thinks that they need clothing, tents, umbrellas, sleeping bags etc.
She said it's easy to park out front and unload and that these people seems to really need the items they gifted.

I saw an interview with FEDASIL in Woluwe St. Pierre (FEDASIL has offices throughout Belgium) last night who seem to be very active, and perhaps need volunteers. Check the internet for the address. They particularly needed donations of men's clothes and shoes, and rucksacks. The Salvation Army has a big depot/warehouse and provides accommodation for homeless men down near the canal. They accept donations of everything from books and clothes to furniture and household items, and give work to the men as well as selling the goods for very low prices. Every little helps. More people should be getting involved!

See this page https://www.facebook.com/groups/communitysupportforrefugeesinbelgium/ for regular updates in English on what exactly is needed at the camp. The situation is changing all the time. For the moment it's people's time rather than donations that is needed, with Arabic speakers and people with medical experience seemingly most in demand.
