Dodgey Dental practices
I've lived in Antwerp for 4 years now and I've had the filling on a single molar replaced approximately 9 times! In some cases twice a year. My dentist hasn't suggested any alternative treatment. He just keeps drilling, filling and collecting his cash. I've tried other dentists but the filling still comes out within months. Are dental practices/materials substandard here or is it just my tooth?
I also had some terrible dental treatment one dentist charged me a fortune and only on final visit explained my mutelle would pay any, we had only just moved her so no back dated insurance. She out and out lied about the cost of alternative treatment. She put in a filling that fell out immediately i changed dentist. I think ask around find a good one and stick with them they will of course be delighted to refill things I've had another suggest they need to replace all my old filling due to age, also avoided them after. They also charged much more than your mutelle would pay and again not pre warned.
There are many good Dentists in België, if in doubt go to see a Hospital.

Speaking from (horrific) personal experience, I'd say that dentistry in Belgium is frighteningly substandard. And yes, many dentists here seem to be out and out crooks.
My experience of dentists here has been excellent for over 20 years and I have regular check-ups. However I've heard of many cases where dentists have ripped off expats who are unaware of what can be refunded by their mutuelle and have believed what their dentist has told them.
If you genuinely feel that you have been 'cheated' by your dentist - that is, that s/he has done substandard work so that you and the mutuelle can be milked for more money for work that should not have been needed - then you are free to tell the mutuelle and they will assess the work done.
On the other hand you have to remember that any medical practitioner is free to charge whatever the market will bear but refunds from the mutuelle are fixed by law and don't vary according to how much you pay.
Finally, never ever accept 'this isn't covered by the mutuelle.' Always insist on an official receipt and let the mutuelle tell you if something isn't covered.
