Most Belgians in favour of anti-smoking measures, survey shows

06:55 06/01/2016

According to a survey of 3,009 people conducted by the Belgian Foundation against Cancer, potential measures to combat smoking in Belgium would meet with little resistance, even from smokers themselves. A whopping 91% of Belgians, for example, are in favour of a ban on smoking in cars when minors are present, including 87% of the smokers surveyed, reports De Morgen.

About 71% agree to a total advertising ban on the sale of tobacco and cigarettes. 72% would like to see more support for smokers who want to quit, such as the reimbursement of effective drugs. 61% agree to a price increase of €1 per pack of rolling tobacco. 50% of those surveyed are in favour of generic packaging for cigarettes, while only 25% are against it.

As of 2015, about 20% of Belgians are smokers, and 17% smoke daily. 72% of the smokers surveyed regret that they ever started smoking, and 64% would like to quit.
