Arrival/Departure record US

I recently checked my electronic I-94 record and I noticed that they have now recorded not only my arrival dates but also my departure dates from the US. The thing is nobody ever checked my passport upon leaving the States, so how do they know? Do the airlines communicate the passenger lists to the authorites?
