Belgian state collects millions in unclaimed inheritances

15:25 02/08/2016

The federal government last year collected about €16.6 million in unclaimed inheritances, reports La Dernière Heure. Since 2007, the Belgian government has collected a total of more than €80 million through unclaimed inheritances. The amount includes about €36 million in inheritance tax, which is distributed among the regions.

Before the Belgian state can seize an inheritance, it must be proven available, which means that there is no heir or the inheritance was refused or denied.
