What’s on this week: 14-20 October
Cultural centre Botanique celebrates the upcoming US presidential election with American Fragments, an ethnographic photo exhibition. Brussels-based journalist Philippe Cornet, a regular visitor to the States since 1981, recently realised how much the country has changed and duly set about documenting these changes with his camera. American Fragments features candids of American celebrities as well as anonymous citizens going through the humdrum of everyday life. Each face reflects another side of the American Dream.

Africa has long been a crossroads of cultures. The third edition of the Africana Flavours food festival showcases the continent’s culinary diversity, the fruit of millennia of exchange and migration. Foodies and their families will revel in delicious regional dishes as they learn about Africa’s rich cultural tapestry. Some of the recipes are age-old while others are recent innovations inspired by global influences. The all-day event is organised by local non-profit The Food Bridge in collaboration with the Brussels chapter of Slow Foods as well as a host of activist organisations.

Urban Foxes, a Brussels-based international place-making collective, advocates for more playful, inclusive and therefore happier cities. To this end they are inaugurating Saint-Cath-sur-Mer which will transform the Fish Market this Saturday with activities, boats, concerts, free food and much more. About 1,800 people have shown an interest on Facebook, so join the crowd.

Taking place at Tour & Taxis, Brussels Horse Days brings the horse lover everything he or she could possibly wish for in a three-day show: an astonishing variety of breeds and equestrian demonstrations on two rings, and more than 100 exhibitors of horse equipment, rider gear, stable gear, Belgian and international equestrian tourism, specialised publications, equine-themed art, and other equine organisations. In the evenings the celebrated show Epona will wow you with its spectacle which "illustrates the perfect symbiosis between man and horse with waterfalls, Cossack trick riding, jousting, knights, Hungarian Post ... sporting and technical achievements by worldwide artists". There will even be some horse whispering...

Alimenterre is a documentary film festival all about human consumption and agriculture, including the Danish documentary Bugs, followed by an insect tasting and concert.

Ritcs Café kicks off its new comedy season with acts by Australian comedian Johnny Kats, the UK’s Neville Raven and Nikolas Rabogliatti of the US and Belgium (in English).
