100 Brits in Brussels become Belgian since Brexit vote

More than 100 British citizens have gained Belgian citizenship in the Brussels region following the UK's decision to leave the European Union last June.

Ixelles, the municipality of Brussels with the highest number of Brits at 1,500, has had 300 people asking for information about the conditions for obtaining Belgian nationality since the Brexit vote. So far 33 have been granted Belgian citizenship and eight others are waiting.

In Brussels-City, 40 Britons have filed a request for Belgian nationality since June, and 19 of them have already received a favourable response. The remaining 21 files are still being processed.

As for the 776 British nationals in Uccle, nine obtained Belgian citizenship in 2016 and another nine since the new year, according to La Capitale.

Of the 709 British nationals in Etterbeek, 25 have acquired Belgian nationality since 1 January 2016 while three others are still awaiting a decision.

Woluwe-Saint-Lambert has 612 British nationals. Since the referendum vote, 12 of them have become Belgian and 23 are still waiting.

In Auderghem, seven British citizens out of the 346 living in the municipality have become Belgian and 10 applications are in progress.

In Saint-Gilles there are 450 British nationals. Twelve cases were introduced in 2016 and nine cases filed so far in 2017. Two British citizens have been granted Belgian nationality last year.

For Berchem-Sainte-Agathe and its 423 British nationals, three applications were concluded last year.

In Watermael-Boitsfort, which counts 263 British, 11 files out of 19 introduced in 2016 received a positive opinion and the other eight are still awaiting reply. In addition, in 2017, four new cases are being processed.
