Controversial housing project underway in Uccle

Les Promenades d'Uccle, a new residential area on the England plateau in Uccle, will finally give rise to 238 apartments and 60 houses. The first license application dates back to 2003, but after 14 years of procedures and a lot of delays, developers were given the green light. Part of the deal requires giving back large 'green zones of biological value' to the Brussels-Capital Region and the municipality, writes Bruzz.

The joint venture between Matexi and Besix RED is responding to the high demand for new houses and apartments, according to the developers. But the project has been met with strong protest from local residents for years, mainly due to the ecological value of the zone, one of Brussels' largest green areas. After 14 years of legal procedures, the project is now fully licensed.

Developers say that the environment will be taken fully into account when planning the district, and the neighbourhood will be accessible to local traffic only. The developers have also agreed to relenquish a large part of the wooded land to the Region and the municipality of Uccle.

Work on the first phase, which includes 18 houses and 76 apartments, started at the end of 2016 with the laying of the roads.
