September deadline for websites to be made simpler

Belgium is embarking on a major project to improve the websites for its public bodies - making them more user-friendly and accessible.

All public organisations, including local councils, have until 23 September to make the necessary changes to their online presence.

A federal government website - accessibility.belgium.be - has advice and best practice guidelines on how to make websites accessible for all.

Belgium "is fully committed to digitisation and is increasingly offering online services", the site says. "All citizens must have access to accessible, simple and suitable websites."

It is part of a bigger European initiative, the Web Accessibility Directive, requiring better access to public sector websites and mobile apps for people with disabilities.

But the move is not just aimed at the 15% of the Belgian population who have some form of disability. Simpler websites will make it easier for everyone to find the information they need.

"Adaptations such as easy-to-understand film subtitling make digital services accessible to everyone," the site adds.
