Smurf mural above passageway near Central Station restored
The Smurfs have been restored on the underside of the archway outside Central Station. Part of the surface of the mural of the Smurfs had fallen to the ground last year due to a water leak but has now been fully repaired.
The mural of the Smurfs looks down on passers-by as they cross from Carrefour de L’Europe at the front of Central Station to Rue Infante Isabelle. The mural was created by street artists with Urbana and unveiled in 2018 in honour of the 60th anniversary of the Smurfs.
Last September, part of the arch – which runs under the Hilton Hotel – collapsed. It happened in the middle of the night, so no one was injured.
Since then, however, a gaping hole greeted pedestrians in the middle of the scene, which illustrates Smurfs doing all kinds of Brussels-related things, like repairing a model of the Atomium, drinking beer and serving up pommes frites. The overhead mural can now take its rightful place on Brussels’ comic strip tour.
