Australian police call off search for Belgian tourist Céline Cremer

Police in Australia have suspended their search for Belgian tourist Céline Cremer who disappeared three weeks ago on the island of Tasmania. They say she could not have survived the harsh weather conditions in the remote area.

The 31-year-old from Liège was last seen on 17 June in the town of Waratah, northwest of the island. It’s believed she left her car at Philosopher Falls some 10km away to go on a day walk on 20 June; the last time her phone had a signal. Cremer’s abandoned car was found in the waterfall's car park on 27 June.

A major search operation was launched in the wilderness area, involving ground teams, whitewater rescue specialists, drones and helicopters, said Commander Stuart Wilkinson of Tasmania police.

“Considerable search efforts have been undertaken in difficult terrain and treacherous weather conditions but unfortunately Celine has not been located.”

He continued: “Expert medical advice has been received that given consideration to poor weather conditions and cool temperatures, Celine could not have survived the conditions she has been exposed to since she was reported missing.”

Police said they were “in constant contact” with Cremer’s family and their thoughts were with them at this difficult time.

Although the rescue operation had been abandoned, the case remained active and all relevant information would be followed up by police in the hope of “bringing closure to her family and loved ones”.
