Not paying customs

Question

Hi
Does anyone know what happens to an item that arrives from outside the EU that you decide not to pay the customs for?
The postman came to the door wanting a huge fee for something that I ordered from a UK site thinking it was to be sent locally and there would be no fees (the website co. is a separate issue I'm dealing with). I didn't pay and it's gone to the post office for collection.
If I don't go and collect the item, will it be returned to sender? How long do they hold it for? Is it like to wind up in the posties Christmas gift lucky dip?
Any insights appreciated.
Thanks.

It will be sent back after 14 days. Our went back to the US and I believe you will more thn likely be charged for shipping from that online retailer. Our item was actually sent from a family member and they got charged for shipping it back ; long story as to why we didn't go get it. By the way, you shouldn't be charged IF it came from within a EU country. I've paid 45 euros on a $20 item before.....frustrating! Good luck!
