parents of mentally retarded child looking for psychological help

Question

Hello,
It has been discovered recently that our two year old daughter is mentally retarded (presumably on a moderate level). As she is our first child we were not aware of early signs like a slow motoric, lingusitic and psychological development, but it was the crèche who insisted that she should be observed by doctors when she turned one. Further tests are schedulde to find out more about the possible reason (genetically, epilepsy, ...). Medically she is treated very well at the AZ Jette and their partner organisations. For us as parents the diagnosis is very diffcult to bear and to get used to. We have as well difficulties in communicating about the situation and it is difficult for us as partners. Are there more parents in the same situation? Can you recommand psychological help for parents? Is there a parent group of mentally retarded children? Does a playing group for children with special needs exist? Thank you very much.

It can be very tough when you first get a diagnosis like that - I absolutely recommend contacting the community help service (http://www.chsbelgium.org/) who fit the bill for what you are seeking. I don't think you will find anglophone support groups but they do exist in Dutch of French, for example: www.frisseclub.net is one. This is the toughest period of coming to terms with your situation, it gets easier, better and life can and will be full of joy and love again. P.S. Saying 'special needs' or 'disabled' will not offend anyone you speak with, retard or retarded may very well cause offense.
