Peeters is Belgium's most common surname, Diallo in Brussels

If you live in Belgium there's a good chance you know someone with the surname Peeters. One in every 350 people has it as their family name, making it the most common in Belgium.

Belgium has 31,926 Peeters, according to the latest statistics from the federal economy ministry published on Tuesday. The top 10 surnames on a nationwide level are Flemish: Peeters, Janssens, Maes, Jacobs, Mertens, Willems, Claes, Goossens, Wouters and De Smet.

In Wallonia, you're most likely to bump into a Dubois - there are 9,450 of them - followed by Lambert, Martin, Dupont, Simon, Leclercq, Dumont, Laurent, Lejeune and Renard.

In multi-cultural Brussels the top 10 family names are Diallo (3,223 people), Bah, Barry, Janssens, Nguyen, Sow, Dubois, Peeters, Jacobs and Martin.
