Petition to save De Brouckère trees in vain

15:38 17/08/2016

The Brussels City Council does not intend to deviate from its plans to remove several trees at Place De Brouckère during the reconstruction of the pedestrian zone there, writes Bruzz. The news comes especially hard for supporters of the petition, 'Save the trees at De Brouckère', which so far has collected more than 2,600 signatures.

The petition was launched by Koen Van Huele after simulation images of the redeveloped pedestrian area revealed that many of trees on the square had disappeared. Despite the massive support shown for the petition, however, the city government does not intend to keep the trees.

"The petition wrongly focusses on just one part of the project," a spokesperson for Brussels mayor Yvan Mayeur told Bruzz. "The reconstruction of the pedestrian zone is in fact a green operation. The focus is unjustly set on those trees, while the overall project is ecologically oriented,” he assured.

The Brussels City government never changes course and never listens to any opinion but their own. Unelected mayor Mayeur has the city (and funding) firmly in his hands. Only he and his zealous supporters matter. Guess the trees will have to be sacrificed to make more room for his beloved pedestrians. A green project with no green. Welcome to Brussels.

This area will look like the area in front of the opera house -- bland, ugly, open space where litter flies about, and no esthetic feature. Doesn't anyone have any taste???? As a citizen one has to request permission to remove a tree from their own property and a process which takes time and money. The city should have more trees not less trees. This huge pedestrian zone is more than ugly -- pedestrians have to watch out for cyclists who weave through the crowd, basic and more than ugly picnic tables which are duty and look ridiculous on the usual gray rainy day, ridiculous looking tree trunks on which to sit, and lane looking in/out horizontal thingees which look like a teenager put them together in the garage. Honestly, this zone goes from bad to worse.

For the Brussels City Council to pay attention to its citizens would set a dangerous precedent. Petitions will be considered only if they comply with the following two rules:

1. The City Council is always right.
2. If the City Council is wrong, refer to rule no. 1.
