PURSING A DEBTER

Question

A tenant of mine has left with huge bill of 'charges' unpaid. The bills are in my name and are calculated according to the individual's meter reading. The person is in brussels has been fired from their job and will not reply to emails or phone calls.
What means are there at my disposal to retrieve the debt? i am aware about going to court etc. anything else?
thanks

J

I'd guess charges are defined in the contract... What else is unpaid? Do they also owe you a leaving indemnity? How much does the deposit cover?

You can get confirmation from the commune of the address they are registered at and send a registered letter to the tenant asking for payment, explaining that if no payment or arrangement is made, you will have no option but to proceed through the courts.

The courts are an expensive option for you if the tenant has no means to pay or leaves the country, but expensive for the tenant if they are found in breach of contract and have to pay you compensation + legal fees.
