Recommendations for novels in French

Question

I am just about at the stage in learning French where I can tackle reading (shortish) books/novels. Currently half way through the first one and enjoying it with the help of a dictionary.

Any recommendations for good reads in French?

Criteria - not too long, vocabulary/ writing style is not excessively difficult. I dont read crime / detective type books or science fiction.

I like historical fiction of any kind and most other types of fiction as well as biographies and autobiographies.

Some of the classics are quite accessible. From my school days (long ago) I remember enjoying Prosper Merimée's short stories, and Molière is easy to read and very funny. I wasn't a star at French so if I found them readable, they can't have been difficult. I also remember that Mauriac was utterly turgid.

Je recommande souvent à mes étudiants Le petit prince. Tu peux également essayer de lire les journaux et de regarder des clips + lyrics sur Youtube.
Le problème avec les romans français est qu'ils utilisent preque tous le passé simple. Et ce temps n'est pas vraiment utile à ton niveau.
