Rental car, pick up one country, drop off in another.

Question

I'd like to know if it is possible to pick up a rental car, in eg the Netherlands, and drop it off in Germany. Are there rental car companies that give better deals than others for this? Is it a really expensive option? Thanks for any advice. I am asking for a Canadian friend who will be visiting soon.

well yes but it will cost a small fortune. Why don't they just do a trip and return the car then take the train back? It will work out much cheaper. In fact given the fact it's Germany and Netherlands, train might be cheaper for much of their trip and then perhaps a car add-on when necessary?

What is a small fortune? Like doubling the rental cost? What companies would do this?

tell your friend to do their own search, it really isn't that hard.

All the major companies will do this but as has been said the cost is eye-watering. I looked into it for a short trip in Portugal a couple of years ago, a four-day round trip was much cheaper than a two-day open jaw, even though start and end point were just 100km apart. So I paid for two days that I didn't want or need.

Hi there, we rented a car from Vienna, Austria to Aachen last year, and it was not bad at all-- even before we found out that they happened to need the car we were dropping off and gave us a further discount at our arrival. We used Sixt. I do recall that it would have been much more expensive if we had dropped it off in Maastricht, even though that was just 30 minutes further away. So, if you have some flexibility as to where exactly you need to pick up/drop off, I think it's worth checking. Some good deals do exist...

Thanks for the answers. Her travel agent is clueless... Sixt does seem like a good deal. She'll have to decide if she wants to pay the extra.
