Retirement

Question

I am eligible to retire in 18 months, if I want to continue working can my employer force me to retire or can I retire at a later date if it suits me ( financially ) better?
Any info welcome.

Is this specifically mentioned in your contract? If so you can only ask your HR people for advice.
You imply that you want to continue for financial reasons. Your mutuelle will be able to advise you about your pension entitlement. You may be pleasantly surprised: my wife certainly was.

No, you will not automatically retire upon reaching the retirement age, though I would contact the FPD/SFP to notify them of this beforehand (assuming you are under the Belgian system). As far as employment is concerned, there are some special termination rules for people who have reached retirement age, but they mostly apply to the notice period that is applicable when the person themselves is giving notice. Your employer will largely have to follow exactly the same rules as for a non-retirement eligible employee if they wish to terminate your contract.
However, if you are ever on sick leave for 30+ days you will no longer be getting reimbursed by the mutualiteit as they expect you to retire and receive benefits that way.

It is also possible to retire and keep working anyway, but whether or not you still get your full retirement benefits depends on things like the length of your career, and I think (though am not sure) your employer has to agree in this case. The good news is they recently loosened the rules in a bid to keep people working. I would highly recommend contacting the FPD/SFP to ask about your case before you actually reach retirement age, their site is http://www.onprvp.fgov.be/nl/about/contact/paginas/default.aspx and they have a free number you can call at 1765.
