Roma gypsies living on ULB/VUB campus

Question

Does anyone know what this is about ? For the last 6 months I’ve seen this presumably extended family (at least 15 individuals) living on campus at the section where the ULB grounds meet the VUB grounds at Arsenal. They are living in one of the 1 storey buildings that has a ULB plaque on it, just next to the European school, accessible via the entrance on Boulevard du Triomphe, near the Mercedes garage.

I find it incredible that they are resident on the grounds of a University. There is regularly rubbish strewn about the area and I have witnessed them (children) intimidating passers-by. I would be surprised to learn that they own or are renting the property as a place of residence from either ULB or VUB, and if that is not the case, I wonder why they have not been evicted? It doesn’t reflect very well on what is supposedly a reputable University.

Anyone have any information?

Indeed there are families of Roma there and (in my opinion) it reflects extremely well on a reputable university that they have given refuge to people (and they are people ... not only gypsies!) who are homeless. The ULB is doing great work to try and find permanent housing for them and over the summer was involved in a project of schooling with the children so that they could start going to local schools.

Perhaps there is rubbish around ... perhaps the children are not as well behaved as we would like .. let us ask why
Tolerance is an important part of society. Most of us (certainly on this webpage) are also immigrants in Belgium - and while we may have the good fortune to have jobs/incomes and homes of our own - not everyone does.

As the OP wonders why they are not evicted - I wonder where the OP would like them to go ?
