Scammers

Question

Beware! The scammers are active. Within the last two days I have had (1) an email from Jobrent Collins. She has 10.2 million dollars in Afghanistan and she needs some help in financing to get it to the USA without the authorities knowledge, and (2) an email from Kufor Daniel with a message saying “Please open the two attachments and reply to me”. I never open any attachment from someone I don’t know. I would recommend that you do likewise. I just deleted the email. The third was a telephone call today from “Alistair” at Microsoft. Alistair has a very strong accent, perhaps Indian. We all should know that Microsoft never calls anyone about Windows so I just told him I wasn’t interested and hung up. He, or someone with a similar accent has called before and said that there may be a problem with my computer and if I boot my computer up he will help me solve the problem. Don’t be taken in. He just wants things like passwords.

This is a followup email to the one received above from Jobrent Collins.

This is the so-called 'Nigeria Scam' and it's been running in one form or another for the best part of 30 years although 'you bear the same surname with my late client' is a more recent refinement.
The aim, as with all scams, is to get you to part with money.

Apparently as of today I have 10,000,000 $ waiting for me in Lesotho.
Should I answer? :-)))

Somewhat surprised that you consider this news. If you've only received 2 spam emails, then you are either incredibly lucky, or you have only recently created your e-mail address.

This article was written five years ago, and even then claimed that as much as 97% of all email was spam, that's apparently something like 130 billion e-mails every day. It's only got worse since then.

My hotmail account that I've had for 10 years, probably gets in excess of 100 spam emails everyday.

The IT manager in our office, tells me we get collectively roughly 5,000 spam emails a week, mostly caught in the spam filters, but even so.
