Second speed check campaign coming in October
The federal and local police have announced that there will be a second speed check campaign on Belgian roads in October. The campaign, an initiative of the police and the Belgian Road Safety Institute (IBSR/BIVV) intended to curb excessive speeding, calls for the installation of additional speed cameras and an extra alert police corps during a period of 24 hours, report De Tijd and Het Nieuwsblad.
Unlike the previous campaign, which encouraged Belgians to identify possible spots to place speed cameras, this time the police will choose new speed camera locations. The exact date of the campaign is not yet known. "We still haven’t decided whether we will announce the date ahead of time, or go for a surprise effect," said Michael Jonniaux, chief of the federal traffic police.
The first such speed check campaign in Belgium took place earlier this year on April 17-18. Of the estimated 400,000 vehicles checked, 20,214 drivers were caught speeding and received a fine.

Perhaps the police should be out catching real criminals rather than traffic control.
