Sleep problems

Question

I'm hoping somebody out there may have some suggestions for me. For quite some time I have experienced difficulty getting to sleep at night. I've tried lots of things; increased exercise, avoided working with laptop etc. before bed, herbal teas etc. Nothing has worked. I'm pretty certain that I need more sleep than I get as I struggle to wake in the morning and often feel miserable during the day following a particularly bad night. I have spoken to my doctor but he has just prescribed sleeping bills which I would prefer to avoid. Can anybody help? All suggestions welcome.

Have you tried hoping to sleep less? Some people just don't need as much sleep. The worst thing you can do is to fight your body rhythms.

Sleeping is very personal, keep it that way. If you have a partner who complains then that's a pity. They don't understand you and don't want to either. I sleep much more than my partner and it isn't a problem. We still enjoy waking up together.

Be productive with your extra waking hours, you may find you are blessed.

You may need a job which better suits you too.

Try listening to a CD of deep relaxation. Or try following the breath on deep breathing. Or try acupuncture. Or, since the jaw is always the last part of the body to relax, and often the teeth are clenched without realising, open the mouth slightly dropping the jaw.

I also would agree with the 'hyper alert' problem. When I notice myself 'racing' a bit in my thoughts during the day and being full of ideas and plans, then I know that it will be difficult to sleep unless I manage to come down from that train of thought. I presume its adrenaline.

The herbal tablets I used are called Dormixx.

It is Valerian http://altmedicine.about.com/cs/herbsvitaminsrz/a/Valerian.htm

Also very effective for occasional use I found Xanax (which is addictive but ok to take occasionally). Xanax is widely used to treat anxiety disorders. I find no side effects from occasional Xanax and have the best sleep with it and wake up rested. But I stress OCCASIONAL.

Before that I tried Mogadon which is a prescription sleeping tablet and can also be addictive. (I was encouraged by medical staff to take a Mogadon tablet in the evening in the maternity hospital after the birth of my son, as I was not sleeping and it helped me to cope with the period after the birth. This was not in Belgium)

Mogadon worked very well for me for OCCASIONAL use and I got great relief due to good sleep, but it gave me a headache for a while in the morning and made me a bit groggy for the first few hours after waking. But then I would feel great due to the sleep.

If you have an understanding doctor, why don't you go and have a chat about medication options. Then you will be better informed to make decision that suit your situation. Don't be scared of medication. I was like that for years and now I realise that my life is far better when I use medication sparingly and intelligently with the support of a very good doctor. I go to Dr Christine Dechamps who is at Rue de Spa and find her excellent, very thorough, careful and understanding.

The hypnotherapy can help with sleeping problems, I use it sometimes with my clients and it is a great tool for some. Like with other types of therapies, some people may not find it useful for them. Learning auto-hypnosis can be specially useful in those cases. It is becoming highly used in Belgium in the recent years and I know a few people beside myself using it.

Catnap. Sleep for 10-60 minutes when you're tired, and enjoy the extra time from 4 hour nights.

as one of the contributors has mentioned meditation should help, also the other reason could be a lack of magnesium in your diet which can be bought at a pharmacy or colruyt or you can stock p with bananas.
