Spring blooms: Visit a flower festival or plant fair in Belgium

From dreamlike cherry blossom and the blaze of colourful tulips to plant fairs for green-fingered gardeners, Belgium boasts seasonal festivals and fairs all around the country.

Many of these horticultural celebrations are sited in gorgeous historic grounds, which are also perfect for springtime strolls.

Hanami - Cherry Blossom Festival  14 March to 19 April - Hasselt (Limburg)

Every spring, the city’s Japanese Garden in Hasselt invites visitors to experience its Cherry Blossom Festival, an ephemeral display of some 225 different varieties of cherry trees. Due to its popularity, the garden is now asking people to book ahead to guarantee a slot to admire the colourful vision. Floralia  3 April to 3 May - Groot-Bijgaarden  (Flemish Brabant)

Located in a private park on the outskirts of Brussels, this floral extravaganza is a popular annual attraction. The 23nd edition once again features millions of seasonal bulbs with staggered blossoming periods. They brighten up the 14-hectare grounds of the atmospheric red brick castle. Pride of place goes to tulips, hyacinths and daffodils, while visitors can also admire a 1,000m2 greenhouse, several gardens, a flower labyrinth and an indoor flower exhibition that changes weekly. Additional attractions include Maya the Bee days with family entertainment, as well as a Venetian Parade (dates yet to be confirmed). Isidoor Van Beverenstraat 5

Concours Amaryllis   4-12 April - Château de Beloeil (Hainaut)

The annual competition devoted to the exotic amaryllis bloom promises an immersive experience. More than 7,000 of the flowering bulbs have been styled into contemporary floral creations, which fill the elegant rooms of the chateau. There are refreshments available, a play area for children, and of course the stately home’s 17th-century French-style landscaped gardens to visit. Rue du Château 11, Beloeil

Foire de Jardin   10-12 April  - Enghien (Hainaut)

For its 21st anniversary edition, more than 250 horticulturalists, architects and garden designers show off their specialities and wares in the idyllic and tranquil setting of Enghien chateau. Explore the four-hectare 17th-century park and pick up new skills in numerous workshops and talks. There’s also stands dedicated to outdoor furniture, pools and spas. As well as gourmet food, artisan stands, castle visits and a kids’ playground are among the attractions. Parc du Château d’Enghien

Royal Greenhouses   17 April to 10 May - Laeken, Brussels

As this fabulous horticultural site is only open to the public for a few weeks a year, you need to book in advance to ensure entry. In a tradition dating back a century, thousands of varieties of plants and trees, including rare species from the collection of King Leopold II, go on display. This was the monarch who commissioned the classical-style greenhouses and winter garden designed by illustrious Belgian architect Alphonse Balat in 1873. Tous au Jardin   17-19 April - Aywailles, Liège

The fourth edition of this garden fair is an opportunity to meet horticultural professionals, while snapping up garden tools and seasonal plants. Hosted by the Brasserie Elfique on the banks of the Amblève river, visitors can enjoy visits of the brasserie, gourmet walks and a food market selling regional produce. Fête des Plantes   18-19 April - La Feuillerie, Celles

Rare and collectors’ plants are the star of the show at this spring fair in the beautiful, landscaped 1.5-hectare park of Château Saint-Antoine, near Tournai. It is followed by three other themed events during the year, including flowering rhododendrons and azaleas on 10 May, hortensias on 13 July and autumn plants on 19 & 20 September. Expect a bounty of rare specialist plants, trees, shrubs and bulbs. Rue de la Feuillerie 1 (Hainaut)

Festival du Jardin du Château de Beez  25-26 April - Namur

This 19th-century chateau and family estate hosts the 7th edition of this garden festival, located close to the River Meuse on the outskirts of Namur. Around 70 exhibitors fill the space, with visitors invited to enjoy walks around the grounds, which include an English-landscaped park complete with rare trees. Les Jardins d’Aywiers  1-3 May Lasne  (Walloon Brabant)

The enchanting seven-hectare English-landscaped park of  a Cistercian abbey hosts this popular event in gardeners’ calendars. Some 200 professional nurseries, landscape gardeners and other experts are on hand to advise you with your garden for this 34th edition. There are also visits of the abbey, a variety of workshops and talks and kids’ activities. Rue de l’Abbaye 14

Beervelde Park   8-10 May - Ghent (East Flanders)

It’s the 75th anniversary of Beervelde Garden Days, a biannual garden fair with the participation of some 240 horticulturalists from Belgium and abroad. The theme of the spring edition of the garden festival is ‘Seasoned’. Also promoting a sustainable and eco-friendly lifestyle, visitors can enjoy culinary delights, workshops, artisan crafts, music and children’s activities. Toleindestraat 25
