Stib orders 36 electric buses for four more routes

09:02 11/03/2026

Brussels public transport operator Stib has ordered 36 additional electric buses as part of its plan to further electrify the capital’s transport system, with plans to add 50 in total this year.

The new vehicles will gradually be deployed across four bus lines in the Brussels region, replacing diesel buses, in line with the city's climate and mobility goals for the next decade.

The expansion is part of a wider effort to modernise the bus fleet and reduce pollution in the city.

According to Stib, the new electric buses will lower emissions while improving the quality of life for residents along the routes. The lines getting new electric buses are lines 47, 56, 58 and 83.

Stib said the new vehicles will lead to “a reduction in emissions of more than 9,000 tonnes of CO2”.

Brussels mobility minister Elke Van den Brandt welcomed the investment, highlighting both environmental and social benefits. "We are consciously investing in liveable neighborhoods," she said.

"These buses are quieter and don't emit polluting exhaust fumes. They provide greater comfort, not only for passengers on board, but also for those living along the lines."

The new order follows earlier investments by Stib to electrify its fleet, including the development of charging infrastructure in bus depots across Brussels.

Brussels aims to gradually phase out diesel buses in favour of zero emission alternatives as part of its climate strategy.

With the addition of these 36 vehicles, Stib continues its transition toward a cleaner and quieter public transport system for the city.
