Tax settlement when moving abroad

Question

Hi xpats,

I have two questions on the mentioned subject. Would appreciate an input from you.

My family is relocating out of Belgium, but withn the EU, this spring. How shall I handle the taxes in 2012 and 2013 (I will be a net beneficiary in both years)? Can I request a calculation and settlement right away, or do I just wait for the normal process to run its course until autumn 2013 and then 2014?

My second question is: what is the net amount that I should have in my pocket, if the gross income within the calendar year is 20,000 EUR for a family of 2 adults and 1 child?

Thanks!

1) "Can I request a calculation and settlement right away" - no really, get your last tax return and find the address of your tax office. Call them and ask. They will do a calculation after you've left. They can reimburse taxes to an account overseas, or better, just keep your Belgian account active until you get the money.
2) you'll have taxes of roughly €3,500 due on an annual income of €20,000. You'll also have social security (ONSS) but I'm not sure how they calculate that if you leave part through a year.
3) Assuming that you've been here under a 'normal' Belgian contract, you'll also get your accrued holiday pay and a pro rata of the 13th month due in December 2013. This will be taxed at your highest marginal rate, so you will probably have overpaid taxes for 2013 when you leave.
