Tax - Woluwe St Lambert

Question

Our landlord (owner of the house that we are renting) came to visit us this evening with a letter that they had received, informing us that we yearly have to pay 1000 euro as their tenants. It is apparently a new tax in the commune called something like "une taxe directe sur les résidences non-principales". Has anyone heard anything about it? We are already paying 89 euro tax every year to Bruxelles Capitale, but now the commune seems to have implemented a new kind of tax.

You can find all the explanations here: http://www.woluwe1200.be/fr/vie-communale/democratie-locale/reglementati...

It is indeed a new tax, implemented for the first time in 2014. This year it will be 1000 euro and will increase (very) slightly every year, in 2018 it will be 1082 euro.

As mentioned, it's a tax only on houses/apartments that are not used as primary residences. You as the tenants living in the house are responsible for this tax if you have not registered with the local commune. However, as such a registration is compulsory, is there a specific reason you have not done so? For example, if you are living and working in Brussels under certain international agreements, then you are not legally obliged to register with the commune, and you are exempt for this tax.

Thank you for the information. We are registered in the commune but will go and see them to find out more.

If you are registered then it's definitely a mistake that your landlord has received this tax bill; it's only for households which are using an apartment or a house as a secondary residence. Best indeed to contact the commune to sort it out.
