Tomorrowland festival fined for using disposable cups
Popular music festival Tomorrowland has been fined €727,000 for using disposable cups instead of reusable ones last summer.
Reusable cups have been compulsory since last year, but the festival decided to use disposable ones anyway in order to save money.
We Are One World, the company that organised the festival, has been ordered by regional authorities to pay a fine of €27,200 plus €700,000, the latter sum being the amount the festival is thought to have saved by using the less environmentally-friendly cups.
The aim of fining the festival organiser not only for the violation, but also for an amount equal to how they profited from it, is to level the playing field for the various music festivals that take place in Belgium.
Tomorrowland was reportedly the only festival in Belgium that did not comply with the reusable cup rule this summer.
