Two Belgian police injured in Charleroi machete attack

15:10 07/08/2016

Two police officers were injured on Saturday in a machete attack at a police station in central Charleroi. The attacker shouted, “Allahu Akbar,” according to local police. The terror alert level in Belgium remains nevertheless unchanged until further notice, writes VTM Nieuws.

The incident took place on Saturday around 16.00 when a man entered the police station in Charleroi city centre. At the security check, he immediately pulled out a machete and used it to attack the nearest officers. One agent sustained injuries to the head and face, and a second was slightly injured.

The perpetrator of the attack was then shot by a third agent, and succumbed to his injuries a short time later at the hospital. He was hit in the chest and leg. The man's identity is not yet known.

Since the offender reportedly shouted “Allahu Akbar,” it might be considered a terrorist act, but further inspection is necessary.
