After constant problems with calc in the water pipes I'm thinking of installing a water softener. Has anyone done this recenty and could offer advice. Where to start?

Had one put in years ago. Water tastes much better, bathrooms look cleaner, need less soap, showering is more pleasant, and my skin doesn't come up in red blotches after a bath.

Downside is the cost and space to put it.
