When to hand in your resignation?

Question

Hi
I'm aware that you have to hand in your resignation at a certain time of the month to avoid wasting a whole month in your notice period.
Unfortunately I wasn't listening properly at the time as I wasn't concerned!
Could you tell me when I'm supposed to do it so it covers my 3 months notice period and nothing more?
Many thanks

Don't worry about it. Hand it in and ask to leave immediately on pay, then if refused, simply be far, far more trouble than you are worth and they will ask you to leave on pay. Seen it time and time again.

If you would like to leave 3 months from now, hand in your notice this week, anytime in janaury and leave end april.
I have been working in Brussels 16 years now, changed to jobs where ex-colleagues have recommended me, that would not have happened if I had taken the advice above.
I suppose if you are an ex-pat who intends moving on soon then maybe it is good advice, you could end up with double pay for 3 months but you would pretty soon get a very bad reputation and have to move on..................

If you have a standard contract you will have to give 6 weeks notice unless you are in a senior post or have been in post for 5 years in which case it is 3 months.
The notice is effective from the first day of the following month so must be received by your employer by the last working day of any month.
Many employers are happy to negotiate an early departure if that is what you want.
The first response doesn't actually make a lot of sense if you are hoping to get a reference from your current employer.
