Wild boar recently seen in Brussels disappears without trace
Action plans to deal with a wild boar that roamed around Woluwe Park until early July are no longer necessary, because the boar is nowhere to be seen, the capital’s environment administration, Brussels Environment, has announced.
“The animal may have found its way back to its natural habitat by its own means, or it may reappear,” a Brussels Environment spokeswoman told Bruzz.
She said that until the boar is seen again, with the last sighting on 5 July, the agency will no longer actively search for it.
To prevent the wild boar from injuring anyone or causing an accident, Woluwe-Saint-Pierre mayor Benoît Cerexhe had urged Brussels Environment to take action.
Earlier this summer, the agency received the go-ahead and decree from the commune to catch the wild boar without the need for official permission, with the boar seen almost every day in June.
A cage was even made available, but the search was abandoned at the end of July.
In June, Brussels Environment announced it had launched a field survey “to map the favourite spots of wild boars”.
The plan was to catch the animal in a cage and release it in the Sonian Forest where it would feel more at home.
Brussels Environment said that euthanasia would have been absolutely the last option, and only if the boar posed a threat to public safety.
