De Valera’s Irish pub in Brussels to close on 1 January
The iconic Irish pub in Place Flagey, De Valera’s, will close in the New Year, it has announced on social media.
Citing problems with its landlord, the popular sports bar revealed it would be pouring its last pints on New Year’s eve.
“To all our regulars, quiz nuts, karaoke stars, sport fanatics and late-night storytellers: this 31st December we open our doors one final time and we want the place filled with familiar faces.”
The appeal to its loyal customer base continued: “Bring your friends, your memories and your best toasts – let’s give De Valera’s the send‑off it deserves and celebrate all the years of laughs, goals, quizzes and late-night chats together.”
Stating that the surprise closure was “due to circumstances outside our control,” the expat watering hole has had ongoing issues with its landlord, previously closing for several months in 2018.
De Valera’s told Bx1: “We tried in vain to find a solution, even going so far as to propose a significant rent increase, but without success... It’s highly unlikely we’ll reopen in this beautiful spot in Flagey, which has been our home since 2007.”
