'Farewell, Brussels': BMW DriveNow quits the city

10:02 02/03/2020

BMW's car-sharing scheme, DriveNow, has said farewell to its Brussels users and ceased trading.

Saturday was the service's last day, with customers receiving a reminder email saying: "We want to take a moment to express our appreciation for the role you played in launching self-service car sharing."

The company added: "It wouldn't have been possible without you."

DriveNow launched in Brussels in July 2016 with a "free-floating" rental service, meaning users could leave their car in any regular parking space and find their nearest vehicle using a mobile phone app.

The company announced last December that it would be closing on 29 February after "not succeeding to convince enough Brussels residents to use our service".

The Brussels market - with 310 cars - had proved unprofitable for DriveNow, which has also quit London and Florence.
