Fire partly destroys municipal greenhouse in Josaphat Park

09:04 22/05/2025

One of the four municipal greenhouses in Josaphat Park in Schaerbeek has been destroyed in a fire.

No one was injured in the fire, which broke out in the greenhouse at around 19.00 on Monday and burned for a little over half an hour before being brought under control.

The greenhouses and the immediate surroundings were evacuated while the fire brigade battled the blaze and municipal workers assessed the damage the next morning.

“The affected greenhouse has been completely destroyed – as soon as we receive permission from the police and the public prosecutor's office, we’ll probably have to demolish the entire greenhouse infrastructure,” said Deborah Lorenzino, alderwoman for public cleanliness and green spaces.

“The vegetation around the greenhouse is slightly damaged, but the rest of the site appears to be undamaged. The three other greenhouses, including the old orangery and the greenhouse where the heating system is located, were also undamaged. The team working in the greenhouses was also able to start work as normal.”

It is not yet clear how the fire started.
