Ghent places container classroom for Roma children

The integration department of the City of Ghent is co-operating  with the University College Ghent (HoGent) to set up a container classroom on a caravan terrain in the city. The city is investing €10,000 on the classroom for children of travelling communities, mostly Roma people, who have set up camp on the outskirts of the city.

Roma children often can’t read or write because their community travels too much for them to be registered at a school. In the container classroom, a dozen students will be able to follow lessons on a voluntary basis from this autumn. HoGent has for several years organised projects on the terrain of caravans for the traveller residents
