Journal restaurant wins best shrimp croquette in Brussels
A newcomer to the Brussels dining scene has claimed this year’s award for best shrimp croquette, dethroning previous favourites such as Fernand Obb Delicatessen and marking a surprise victory in one of the capital’s most beloved culinary competitions.
Journal, located on Avenue Orban in Woluwe-Saint-Pierre, near Stockel metro station, was named the 2026 winner of the annual contest organised by visit.brussels, which celebrates Belgium's iconic grey shrimp croquette.
The competition, judged by a professional jury and mystery tasters, evaluates entries on flavour, texture, seasoning and the balance between shrimp and bechamel.
Journal’s winning croquette impressed judges with its generous filling of North Sea grey shrimp, crisp golden crust and refined seasoning. The restaurant succeeds previous winner Fernand Obb Delicatessen, long considered a benchmark for the dish.
The Bulletin visited the restaurant following the announcement and the croquettes were worthy of taking the title from the former champion.
The balance between the creamy interior and crunchy exterior stood out, as well as the more than generous size of the croquettes.
Shrimp croquettes are a staple of Belgian brasserie cuisine, typically served with fried parsley and lemon. The annual competition has become a fixture in the Brussels foodie calendar, drawing entries from established brasseries and newer culinary ventures alike.
For Journal, the award represents a strong start. Beyond its prize winning croquettes, the restaurant offers a varied menu combining traditional Belgian dishes such as roasted chicken with more contemporary options such as Basque cheesecake with matcha.
