King Baudouin Foundation invests over €1 million for cycling projects in and around Brussels

Six “exemplary and sustainable” cycling infrastructure projects have been awarded more than €1 million by the King Baudouin Foundation (KBF), Belgium’s philanthropy institution announced in a statement.

For the second consecutive year, the Bikes in Brussels Awards honoured projects that help make cycling safer and more comfortable in and around the Brussels-Capital Region.

The Bikes in Brussels Fund, managed by the KBF, was launched in 2025 to encourage more people to choose sustainable mobility options.

It recognises cycling infrastructure projects that are already open to the public: highlighting best practices and inspiring further investment in high-quality cycling facilities.

An independent jury selected six projects showcasing a range of solutions to help encourage more people to cycle: improving safety in urban areas, overcoming barriers created by road and railway infrastructure, and strengthening links between Brussels and the surrounding areas.

They include a Fast Cycle Route between Avenue des Communautés and the inner Ring Road that links the capital with the periphery; the Dikke Linde Cycling Bridge connecting Boom and Brussels; the Fast Cycle Route Brussels-Bertem ensuring a fast and safe cycle link between Brussels, Kortenberg, Bertem and Leuven; the Fast Cycle Route Cycling Underpass along the Brussels-Willebroek Canal; Groenendaal Cycling Tunnel and Eco-Recreation Bridge; and the Saint Bernard Cycling Street in Saint-Gilles.
