New guide to Sonian Forest reveals fascinating history, plus 20 walking and cycling trails
As one of the largest suburban woodland areas in Europe, the Sonian Forest is a highly-valued green space for Brussels residents.
That’s why the second version of a guide to the forest lying southeast of the Belgian capital is in English as well as French. The book is published by [aparté]-éditions and will be available from the end of April.
The Fôret de Soignes. The Green Heart of Brussels is divided into two sections. The first traces the history of the forest and includes fascinating stories about its rich past which dates from the ice age. Although two-thirds of its trees were cut down in the 19th century, the site still covers almost 5,000 hectares.
The second part provides practical information about exploring the extensive woods by foot or by bike with suggestions for 20 marked and unmarked routes that can be downloaded directly to a smartphone.
The guide also offers tips on places to eat and drink in the forest as well as how to protect the ancient site to ensure its future.
It is written by art historian Isabelle Douillet-de Pange, who is also a curator at the Folon Foundation, and humanitarian project director and cycling enthusiast Alain Robyns.
