Multiple commemorations planned for 10-year anniversary of Brussels terror attacks

14:07 18/02/2026

Several official commemoration ceremonies will take place on the 10-year anniversary of the Brussels terror attacks on Sunday 22 March.

The first ceremony will be held in the morning in the departure hall of Brussels Airport at about 8.00, where two bombs exploded and killed 16 people in a baggage check-in area.

The second will be held later at Maelbeek metro station, where a bomb detonated there also killed 16 people.

Prime minister Bart De Wever, along with King Philippe and Queen Mathilde, will be present for the ceremonies.

“In the course of the morning, they will also meet those affected,” the palace said.

Shortly before noon, a third commemoration will begin at the monument to the victims of terrorist acts on Rue de la Loi, not far from the Cinquantenaire park. A minute’s silence, the laying of wreaths, speeches, testimonials and a musical performance are planned.

Representatives of the European Union will participate in the ceremony there and the ceremony will be broadcast live on national television channels.

Brussels public transport operator Stib will also hold a commemoration ceremony the day before, when people will form a human "chain of hope" at Maelbeek metro station.

“Ten years after the attacks of 22 March 2016, Stib wishes to bring together the victims and their families with everyone who showed exceptional commitment and courage on that day,” the transport operator said.

“That’s why Stib is organising a human chain of hope, as a tribute to the victims and in recognition of the essential role played by the emergency services and first responders.”

These commemorations are being organised by the federal government, Brussels Airport and Stib, in collaboration with those affected, their families and loved ones.

“It’s a moment of reflection and tribute to the victims of the attacks in 2016 and other terrorist acts in Belgium and abroad,” the organisers said.
