Belgium gives €22 million to Rwandan infrastructure projects

Belgium has released more than €22 million to help fund Rwanda’s infrastructure budget, particularly with regards to improving the country’s rural electricity grids. The latest grant amount is part of a larger agreement signed between both governments that totals €160 million to be allocated between 2011 and 2016. The financial package is specifically earmarked for projects within Rwanda’s health, energy and decentralisation sectors.

A major portion of the latest grant will be used for improving reliable, affordable access to electricity for both homes and public institutions in rural areas. Through sufficient delivery of power, the programme is striving to boost economic and social development, two priorities for the Rwandan government. Roughly 21,000 households will benefit from the improved infrastructure once the project is fully realised.
