KAA Gent win Belgian title for first time
Football club KAA Gent yesterday won the Belgian title for the first time in the club’s 115-year history. Ghent’s Buffaloes became champions of Belgium with a 2-0 win at home to Standard Liège. Sven Kums and Renato Neto scored the winning goals.
Kums, who scored the opening goal against Standard, told Voetbal International: "It's my first goal of the season and I think it was an important one. We may not have expected this at the start of the season, but we have shown our best football. I think we deserve this championship."
KAA Gent coach Hein Vanhaezebrouck, in his first season with the team, was overjoyed with the win, saying, “This city has waited so long for the title.”
Fans filled the streets in the centre of Ghent following last night's match and celebrated until the early hours of this morning.
